This question has been on my mind after a diverse journey in marketing led me to seek new challenges that would push my boundaries. This path of discovery brought interesting turns: I found myself proactively declining a marketing role, while at the same time, facing a rejection in a field that was entirely new to me.
The most memorable rejection was from the interview process for the Head of Insights & Special Projects at Company X.
The task was a strategic case study on accelerating EV adoption, to be completed in just four working days. Using only public data, I dedicated myself to crafting a thorough strategic plan. My presentation to the hiring manager was met with encouragingly positive feedback on my methodology, analytical depth, and the dedication I had put in.
Ultimately, however, the decision came down to a "lack of fit" concerning career motivations and goals between both parties at this time. This is a perfectly normal and essential part of the hiring process, where mutual "fit" is paramount.
A friend of mine, upon hearing I intended to share this, expressed some concern, suggesting that we're often expected to share only our "victories." I truly understand and appreciate that viewpoint. Yet, at this point in my journey, I see everything as an experience. The result of any endeavor is not solely a reflection of one's ability or effort, but is shaped by numerous factors. What I am most proud of is the serious commitment, the passion, and the courage it took to challenge my own limits.
As Company X did not require an NDA and this entire analysis is a product of my own research and intellect, I am sharing it as a personal case study. The content has been edited to remove any brand references.
I believe knowledge should always be free; it's the strategic thinking that holds the value 😉. This case study is heavily focused on methodology, and my hope is that it can provide a fresh perspective, a few new ideas, or simply a spark of inspiration for your own strategic planning.
Navigating the senior-level job market is never easy. Today, a job must be more than a livelihood; it must be about creating value, enabling constant growth, and feeling worthy of our time. This requires resilience, dedication, and deep empathy for ourselves, especially when the results aren't what we hoped for. Keep moving forward, and the path will appear 🌱.
With every experience, our analysis and thinking become sharper, we understand ourselves more deeply, and we have more value to bring to the table. May all of our journeys be filled with fortitude and deserving success ❤️.
